ROOFING RESOURCES LIBRARY
Roofs can be various shapes, designs, angles and materials. These factors can greatly impact the costs of installing or replacing the roof. In this section we will provide the different types of roofing styles, components of roofs, material types and tools used by professionals for calculating your roof pitches (angle/steepness) and sizes.
ROOFING COMPONENTS
A roof consists of several key components. base layer typically includes a boards, plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) deck, providing structural support. Underlayment and/or insulation is then added to protect against moisture, sound or energy barriers. On asphalt shingled roofs in northern climates ice and water shield is added around the eaves to provide an extra layer of protection. These are then followed by your outer layer that is visible. This outer layer depending on roof style and desired look can be asphalt shingles, cedar shake, clay tile, fiber cement shingles, metal panels, metal shingles or synthetic shingles. For low slope or flat roofs, the outer layer options are built up roofing (BUR), EPDM, PVC, rolled asphalt or TPO. These outer layers are the primary waterproofing layer. supported by components that include flashing to prevent leaks at joints and edges, and ridge vents for ventilation to extend the roof's lifespan.
ROOFING MATERIAL TYPES
There are several types of roofs, each with unique features benefits. Asphalt shingles are popular for their affordability and ease of installation, while metal roofs offer durability and energy. Tile roofs provide a distinct aesthetic and excellent longevity, and flat roofs are commonly used in commercial buildings for their practicality. Choosing the right type of roof depends on your budget, climate, and architectural.
ROOF STYLES

-
Dimensional Shingles: Also known as architectural or laminate shingles, these are the most common type. They are made from multiple layers of asphalt, giving them a thicker and more textured appearance that resembles wood shake or natural slate.
-
Luxury Shingles: These are the highest quality asphalt shingles, offering premium protection and aesthetics. They are designed to replicate the look of high-end roofing materials like natural slate or cedar shakes
There are 7 major manufacturers of asphalt shingles that have distribution in the United States and each has several different product lines. The manufacturers in alphabetical order are Atlas, CertainTeed, GAF, IKO, Malarkey, Owens Corning and TAMKO.
